about

Mycelium Shroud's self titled debut was recorded in the fall and winter of 2022/23.

The debut full length release from Mycelium Shroud finds this death, doom metal three-piece not even mentioning the names of the trio of musicians who’ve come together for this self titled album, although a hunt around the scant information found elsewhere reveals them to be Chad, Truck and James. Adapting three songs from their initial debut outing and augmenting them with a further six new cuts, this forceful statement, in the main, pushes forth at a crawl that unmercifully grinds much in its path. Ragged around the edges - possibly intentionally so - the current trend of keeping things decidedly lo-fi (not my own personal preference to be honest) is strictly adhered to here, meaning that the drums may well sound like they were recorded in a metal vat, but somehow it’s not really to the detriment of the equally sludgy mix. Where the interest really comes into play is the expertly arranged vocals that are often more than one single line of harsh throat utterances, with multiple different strands of voices hammering into each other and yet still dragging you along with them. It’s hardly earth shattering stuff and yet, I can’t quite put my finger on anyone else doing it to such beguilingly horrid effect.
Atmosphere works at the core of the best moments here, “Razorblade Smile” carrying the intent its title evokes, while “The Witch” somehow emits an even darker surge then can be found elsewhere. Where things maybe don’t quite mesh so well is through the guitar solos, which while in their own right good, are not always as aligned with the music gurgling underneath as they might be.
Forceful, brutal and yet nuanced, this self titled effort possibly doesn’t quite come together as it often hints it might, but the highpoints are pretty damn intense, and those vocals sure do snag the ear. As debut full lengths go, this is maybe a little too perfunctory to truly transcend its lo-fi surrounds, and yet there’s a spine chilling charm about Mycelium Shroud nonetheless.
